Every year, on the last Sunday of June, we hold our annual Strawberry Festival. It is named for the strawberry shortcake we sell during the festival, made from strawberries grown and harvested in Monkton, but most know it as our annual used book sale.
For the entire month of June, our library accepts donations of used books whenever we are open. These books are then organized by library volunteers and trustees for the sale. We also organize a silent auction featuring products and gift cards from local business.
All proceeds from this festival go directly to the library.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do you start accepting donations?
We accept donations starting in late May or early June, depending on when in the month the sale falls, and stop accepting them the Friday before the sale. We ask that you not leave donations outside for fear they may be damaged by wind or rain. Please only bring donations when we are open:
Tuesday 3:00 – 7:00
Thursday 3:00 – 7:00
Friday 9:00 – 1:00
Saturday 9:00 – 1:00
Are there any books donations you won’t accept?
We do not accept textbooks, magazines, or reader’s digest editions of books. We also reserve the right to refuse books that are moldy, badly damaged, or lack their covers.
Do you keep any of these donations for the library?
Our librarians go through books as they come in and often pull items to add to the collection. The amount they add to the collection varies, especially because the space is so tight that they have to be very selective in their choices.
Do you have to be a member of the library to donate books?
Not at all! We will take donations from anyone who wants to give them. However, if you’re interested in getting a library card, we’d be happy to issue you one when you come to drop things off.
Where is the festival held?
While we used to hold the festivities on the green beside the library, a few rainy festivals convinced us to move things inside. We now have our festival at the Monkton Volunteer Fire Department.
What kind of books do you sell at the festival?
We usually have a large amount of adult fiction as well as picture books and young adult items. The rest of our genres vary from year to year, depending entirely on what we get for donations.
Is this event child-friendly?
What kind of activities will you have available at the event?
There are always live musical performances, as well as the RML Pop-up Library where you can get information about the library (or a library/Home Card). Other activities change from year to year, though we hope to start expanding to include face painting, coloring contests, and other fun activities.
What is a silent auction?
Basically this is ebay, done the old fashioned way. At the sale we set out a variety of goods, gift certificates, and other items that were donated for us to sell. For each item there will be a bidding sheet where people can write down how much they are willing to bid. Other people can then go around and write higher bids on that item as many times as they want until the auction ends. Whoever has the highest bid at the end gets the item for the amount they bid.
What kinds of things do you sell for the silent auction?
We try to feature products from local businesses. This can range from handcrafted woodworking items and local photography to gift cards for local restaurants and vouchers for free lessons in things like horseback riding or knitting.
If you would like to offer something for our silent auction, please stop by or contact us (at 453-4471 or firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information.
What kind of food and drink are available at the sale?
We have strawberry shortcake available (or any combination of strawberries, ice cream, and cake as you request), as well as hotdogs, water, and lemonade.
